Capital Budgeting of Interdependent Projects with Fuzziness and Randomness

چکیده
This paper discusses the problem of capital budgeting in the situation where only some model parameters are well described by their past data and therefore are specified by random variables, whereas the remaining model parameters can hardly be predicted by historical data and therefore they are described by means of fuzzy variables. In order to be able to process such hybrid data, a model of the problem is proposed. The model takes into account both stochastic and economic interdependency between projects. Additionally, a new hybrid method for solving this model is developed. The method combines stochastic simulation with arithmetic on interactive fuzzy numbers and nonlinear programming. As a result a set of Pareto-optimal alternatives is obtained. In order to illustrate the performance of the proposed hybrid method, an example from metallurgical industry is provided.

A Dynamic Capital Budgeting Model of a Portfolio of Risky Multi-stage Projects
This paper presents a linear programming model in which a portfolio of projects is modelled as decision trees. It is also shown how scenario thinking can be combined with a capital budgeting model in order to permit uncertainty considerations. Furthermore, the programming of an option to wait and synergies of two projects is described.
متن کاملThe Managerial Imperative of Evaluating Non-capital Expenditures within a Capital Budgeting Context
It has long been an accepted precept that the purpose of management is the maximization of shareholder wealth. Few would dispute the notion that projects requiring long-term capital investments should be subjected to capital budgeting. Numerous authors have, however, questioned the appropriateness of subjecting non-capital expenditures, such as advertising, research or product development, to c...
متن کاملCapital rationing and managerial retention: the role of external capital∗
In modern businesses, firms face new challenges of managerial retention in capital budgeting process. We consider a model in which a manager privately observes the capital productivity of a project and has access to multiple outside financing options. We show that if the manager can obtain funding from either internal or external capital (but not both), the firm may exclude highly profitable in...
متن کاملMultistage Capital Budgeting with Delayed Consumption of Slack
Capital budgeting frequently involves multiple stages at which firms can continue or abandon ongoing projects. In this paper, we study a project requiring two stages of investment. Failure to fund Stage 1 of the investment precludes investment in Stage 2, whereas failure to fund Stage 2 results in early termination. In contrast to the existing literature, we assume that the firm can limit the m...
متن کاملFuzzy capital budgeting
Fuzzy equivalents of all the classical capital budgeting (investment choice) methods are generalised or proposed. These equivalents can be used to evaluate and compare projects in which the cash ows, duration time and required rate of return (cost of capital) are given imprecisely, in the form of a fuzzy number. c © 2000 Elsevier Science B.V.
